Historical Background
In 1980, the US Federal Government passed the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act. This program, nicknamed Superfund, authorizes the government, and specifically the EPA, to fund the cleanup of sites that are contaminated with hazardous materials.
The cleanup of the contaminated sites is funded by the responsible parties, as well as through tax dollars. Since the inception of the project in 1980, more than 1,700 sites have been designated, with just over 400 deleted from the list following their satisfactory cleanup. Despite the success in deleting some sites from the list, there are currently 53 sites that have been proposed for addition to the list.
